Superdawg (Hot Dogs) – Chicago, IL - 12/31/08

In a city where the hot dog is king Superdawg rises above the rest. Since 1948 the quirky hot dog stand has become an icon and has been featured on
countless TV programs. Most recently Superdawg was featured on the Travel Channel’s show
“Hot Dog Paradise” which visited seven of the top hot
dog places in the country. My wife, sister and I hopped in the car and head over for our first experience at Superdawg. As I knew we were getting close
I kept my eyes fixed on the building tops looking for those recognizable hot dog characters atop the building. Two 12 foot hot dog statues were added to
the building to attract customers. I think it worked because the parking lot was packed.

Superdawg offers two dining options, car delivery or takeout. The old drive-in speaker system is still in use offering car-hop service. We opted to go up
to the takeout window to check the operation out. I ordered the Superdawg with all the fixings and sides of Superonionchips and Superveggies. A
Superdawg is a classic Chicago style hot dog which consists of a pure beef hot dog (their own recipe) topped with mustard, tangy piccalilli, kosher dill
pickle, chopped Spanish onions and a hot pepper. Piccalilli is relish which contains finely chopped gherkin pickles are has a unique bright green color
and the taste is on the sweet side. The Superdawg is served in a small box on top of Superfries. As I opened the box I could hardly control my
excitement but with the dog wedged in with the fries it really was a bit of a challenge to get it out of the box without losing all the toppings. All three
of us had trouble and my biggest concern was splitting the bun. You’ll be relieved to know that all three dogs were safely removed from the box and
immediately devoured. A Chicago dog is unique because of the toppings and Superdawg has the perfect combination of fresh ingredients. The dog
itself was plump with just enough crunch in the outer casing. The soft bun and the crunchy pickle provide a nice contrast. It is messy but it’s worth
it. The superfries were crinkle cut and in my opinion were just average. I think by having them in the box they became a little soft. I prefer crispy
fries but that’s just me. The superonioncips were interesting. Instead of the typical onion ring they cut it in a wedge. It had the same onion taste but
you didn’t have to deal with the problem of pulling the whole ring out of the breading which sometimes can happen with traditional onion rings. My
favorite of the three was the superveggies which consisted of fried mushrooms, corn and zucchini. The Superdawg is still the star of the show and it
ranks as one of the best dogs I’ve had in a while. If you are in Chicago check it out. They also have a location in Midway Airport now.
