Rhinebeck Farmers Market

June 14th, 2009

Thankfully farmers markets can be found all over the Hudson Valley. One of my favorites is the Rhinebeck Farmer’s Market which runs every
Sunday from 10-2 PM. Rhinebeck also has many nice restaurants in town. The key to a good farmer's market is being able to make a complete meal
from the market alone. That means a variety of produce, bread and meat. Those are the necessities to me. Produce and bread are usually mainstays
at any market but the meat can be harder to come by. The Rhinebeck market includes two meat vendors selling beef, poultry, pork and even wild
game. In addition to the keys I mentioned the market also includes vendors selling Hudson Valley wine and cheese. You really could make a complete
meal from start to finish using only ingredients from the market. That’s the way it should be and that is the key to getting repeat customers instead
of people just passing by.
The Valley Table Magazine has a great list of farmer's markets listed by category, here’s a link to find a market close to you.

On this particular visit I was not looking to make a complete meal. The day before we hosted a
baby shower for one of our close friends so we had plenty of leftovers that needed to be used. For
the shower I made
smoke pork tenderloin using a recipe I found online that had an
apple/apricot marinade. I substituted peach for the apricot and it turned out great. So at the
market I was hoping to find some veggies to go with the leftover pork.
Migliorelli Farm had
plenty of wonderful produce to choose from. The farm is located in upper Dutchess County and
it’s a family run operation now in its third generation. I opted for the carrots and the shell
peas. I plan on sautéing the carrots and peas in butter with a little salt and pepper. With farm
fresh vegetables I like to keep it simple and let the freshness be the star of the dish. Overall it
should go well with the pork.

A quick stroll through the market gave me plenty ideas for my next trip. Specifically the
vendor selling venison. It’s something I have never cooked before but I think it might be on the
horizon.

On the way home we made a quick stop at the
Vanderbilt Mansion on route 9 in Hyde Park. It’
s free to enter the grounds which offer a great view of the Hudson River. It looks like a great
spot for a picnic or a walk around the property. Summer in the Hudson Valley is a great time
of the year.
