McKinney & Doyle (American) – Pawling, NY

March, 24th 2009

McKinney and Doyle is both a bakery and a restaurant thriving as one. Shannon McKinney and Brian Doyle are both graduates of the Culinary
Institute of America and in 1986 opened up their own bakery in Pawling New York. Their focus was baked goods made the right way, from scratch,
with the best possible ingredients. Over the years menu items were added until they finally had the need to expand into a full service restaurant.
Today the restaurant and bakery are located next to each other in the heart of the village of Pawling in a 120 year old brick building. Upon
entering it just feels how a Hudson Valley restaurant should feel, warm and welcoming in a historic setting. The food builds on that theme serving
classic comfort food like meatloaf to pork schnitzel.

The menu offers a lot of diversity with keeping with the central theme of American cuisine using quality ingredients, including many right from
the Hudson Valley. One of the great things about a restaurant that is also a bakery is the warm loaf of bread that’s served to start the meal. I
always say that you can tell a lot about a restaurant by the bread and in this case it doesn’t get any better. On this visit we started with the
Barbecue Chipotle Pork Tostada. The pork was marinated and cooked till fork tender. Citrus Cole Slaw, stilton cheese and avocado accompanied the
pork and served on a crispy tortilla. All main courses are served with a house salad. I tried the seafood pasta for my main course. The bowl was
literally overflowing with  seafood including Maine lobster, shrimp, scallops and baby clams in a white wine reduction sauce. I’ve had similar
dishes other places only to be disappointed by the lack of lobster in the dish. At McKinney & Doyle that was not a problem. It seemed like a whole
small lobster was included. My serving included two claws, which are my favorite part of the lobster and plenty of tail meat. It was absolutely
loaded. The sauce was properly portioned and complimented the sweet taste of the lobster and shrimp without droning their flavors.

As you can image, any restaurant connected to a bakery is going to excel at desert. One of my wife’s specialties is bread budding so we decided try
theirs. At McKinney & Doyle they make a chocolate centered bread pudding. The bread surround a warm and gooey chocolate filling that is
complimented with creme Anglaise and caramel. The flavors all worked well together but the chocolate was the clear star.
Overall McKinney & Doyle is one of those places you find yourself returning to often. The casual atmosphere makes it a great middle of the week or
spur of the moment choice knowing that you’ll always be getting a great meal. The service is friendly yet attentive making you feel right at home.
