Fishkill Farmers Market - Fishkill, NY
July 2nd 2009
Dodging the rain drops I made my first visit to the Fishkill Farmers Market on Main Street in Fishkill New York. My focus today was on vegetables.
The market featured four Hudson Valley farms today so I purchased something from each stand. Buying vegetables locally ensures that you get
them at their peak and freshest state. You’ll see the difference in the meals you prepare. When I get vegetables from the market I like to focus on
simple preparations. Today I got spring onions, Siberian White Kale, Sugar Snap Peas, carrots, tomatoes, and garlic. All of the vegetables were from
Hudson Valley farms with the exception of the tomatoes.
Common Ground Farm had some great snap peas that tasted great raw. I might use them raw in a salad. I really think cooking them might be
unnecessary. Common Ground Farm is located just north of Beacon on Route 9d in Fishkill, NY. The farm serves as an educational center offering
tours, learning programs and also Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). A CSA is basically a membership program to receive food directly from
the farm. Members typically pay an annual fee and also help out with the planting and harvest in return they receive regular bundles of vegetables
from the farm. It’s a great way to get the freshest produce while also supporting local farms. I do not belong to one yet but it’s in my future plans.
Fishkill Farms had some interesting Siberian White Kale. The leaves are a paler green then the supermarket kale we are used to. The stalks also
seemed more delicate. I think I’ll use some of the garlic I got at another stand to make a sautéed kale side dish. Fishkill Farms has been feeding the
Hudson Valley and New York City since 1914. They offer pick-your-own for a variety of fruits including blackberries and cherries which are
available now and then apples towards the end of the summer. They also have market at the farm selling their fruits, vegetables, eggs and chicken.
In addition to the farm stands the Fishkill Farmers Market has a couple of bread bakers and a table focused on Italian specialties from Arthur Avenue
in the Bronx. During the summer months it makes sense to rely on the market instead of a large supermarket. It’s conveniently located right in the
center of Fishkill, there is a wide variety of vegetables and the quality can’t be matched. It’s the best way to elevate your home cooking, get the best
ingredients. I also recommend talking to the people at the market. They can probably suggest some ways to prepare their produce. Farmers markets
are also very affordable and in many cases can be cheaper than the supermarket. So save some money and get the freshest ingredients.
