Fiesta Cove (Peruvian) – Stamford, CT
March, 27th 2009
About a year ago a friend of mine from work turned me onto Peruvian cuisine. He grew up in Peru and came to the state when he was around ten
years old, eventually settling down in Fairfield County Connecticut. To be honest with you before meeting him I had no clue what Peruvian food
even was and didn’t even know we had Peruvian restaurants in the area. To my surprise the towns along the southern coast of Connecticut are rich
with Latin restaurants.
Peruvian food is a combination of Amerindian and Spanish food with strong influences from African, Arab, Italian, Chinese, and Japanese cooking.
Chinese immigrants started arriving in Peru around the 1850’s and had a lasting effect on their cuisine. Even the appearance of some of the dishes
is reminiscent of Chinese style with chopped vegetables and meat stir fries and served with rice.
Probably my favorite part of a Peruvian meal is the aji amarillo sauce that’s served with the bread. It’s a dipping sauce made from lettuce, chili
peppers and mayonnaise. It’s silky smooth and highly addictive. You’ll find that you’ve gone through an entire loaf of bread just because of the
sauce. The aji Amarillo was a little milder than I’ve had at other places but it was still very good. Perhaps I was served the white boy version. A
common dish found in most Peruvian restaurants is Lomo (beef) or Pollo (chicken) Saltado. The dish is quite simple but extremely satisfying. Beef
or Chicken is stir fried. Onions and tomatoes are added plus some aji sauce, a little soy sauce and white wine vinegar. The surprise is that It’s served
over French fries with a side of rice. Fiesta Cove served what to me seemed like a very traditional Lomo and Pollo Saltado. The chicken was nice an
moist and the sauce had a nice depth of flavor. It’s one of those dishes that just leaves you feeling fully satisfied.
The dining room is very casual and service is friendly. They also offer great lunch specials. Main dishes are about $8. Can’t beat a meal like that. If
you haven’t tried Peruvian food I recommend you give it a try.
