CitiField Food Review Part 2 – Flushing, NY
May 9, 2009
this was my second trip to the Mets new home, Citifield. I had an opportunity to explore more of the park and sample some additional food choices. I'm
going to keep this article on the shorter side. For my more comprehensive review of Citifield read Part 1 of my article.
Unlike Shea Stadium there is now a reason to arrive early to the ballpark, and that reason is the food. We didn't arrive as early as we would have
liked but we made a beeline to the Shake Shack. I have been to the original location in Madison Square Park but I was curious to try the Citifield
version. As we arrived we realized we had over shot the line which extended far back into the left field concourse. Still we felt it was worth the wait
which ended up being about half and hour. At the MSP location the line can be as long as an hour. The first thing people always ask is, was it worth
the wait. Honestly that is for you to decide but what I can tell you is that it's a really great burger. Very juicy with a solid meaty flavor. The cheese is
melted dripping down the side of the burger which is sandwiched between two soft buns. So for us it was worth the wait.
Last time at Citifield I had tried the pulled pork sandwich from BlueSmoke. My intention was to visit another food stand but BlueSmoke sucked me
back in, this time for the Spare Ribs. For $10 you get four very meaty ribs. They were cooked perfectly to the point of just falling off the bone. There
was a good smoke ring again an indication of the real wood they use in their smoking. The ribs were well sauced, enough to enhance the flavor but
not too much that it overpowered the meat. As my friend and I devowered the ribs from a table out in centerfield we kept looking around to make
sure that we weren't making it onto the broadcast with sauce all over our faces ala George Costansa from Seinfeld at the US Open. For those of you
that remember that episode George was cause on TV devouring ice cream while the commentators made fun of him. Luckily we avoided that kind of
humiliation but it wold have been worth it for the ribs.
Once again we opted for a mid-game snack of fries from Box Frites. Again they were fantastic and served hot. Any fries sitting for more than 2
minutes are tossed aside ensuring that everyone gets the best quality possible.
After the game I wandered into the Taste of the World Market located in the corner of right field. It's a unique feature for a ballpark but it feels like a
market you'd find in the city. Three vendors serve Sushi, Quesadilla's and Mama's of Corona sandwhiches. You can also get chips, candy, salads and
drinks. I didn't try any of the food but looks like a good spot to grab a sandwich from Mama's.
Overall the food still lived up to the hype. The team is also starting to live up to that hype we they completed a 7 game winning streak this past
weekend.
