Burgers, Shakes and Fries (Burgers) - Greenwich, CT - 6/17/08
If first learned about this new burger place called Burgers, Shakes and Fries while reading some posts on Chowhound, the food oriented website. BSF is
located in Greenwich Connecticut only a few minutes off 95. The mission of owner Kory Wollins is to provide a great food at great prices. In my book
he’s succeeded.
As you can imagine BSF specializes in just that, burgers, shakes and fries. The menu also includes Hot Dogs and Chicken Sandwiches. Located within
a residential area BSF has a limited number of seats long the counter and windows. The atmosphere is defiantly funky, as defined on their website,
with bright orange walls. It’s a very modern and clean look. I especially liked the wooden counter tops.
This was my first trip to BSF so I kept it simple with a single burger with American cheese and pickles. They don’t offer lettuce on their burgers so don’
t even ask. Personally I agree with this decision. I’m not a fan of lettuce on a burger since it tends to wilt under the heat of the hamburger. I also got a
side of fries, how could you not?
The burger is served on two slices of toasted bread. Typically I’m not a fan of toast instead of a bun but it really worked in this case. I think the key is
that they toast the bread with some butter on the flattop grill as you would a grilled cheese sandwich. This avoided the dryness you get from a
standard toaster. My one criticism of the use of toast is that when you have a round piece of meat between rectangle pieces of bread it always results
in a few bites that will be nothing but the bread. Like I said just a minor criticism. Overall the burger was fantastic. To me the sign of a great burger
is if you need a napkin after the first couple of bites. BSF passed that test with flying colors. The meat was a perfect medium rare which is their
default unless you specify otherwise. Very moist and tasty burger without any unnecessary spices, just salt and pepper. I devoured mine in no time
at all. The fries were also very good but nothing to write home about. However they were cooked perfectly, nice and golden on the outside and soft
and fluffy on the inside. They were crinkle cut fries which would not be my first choice. I later learned via email from owner Kory Wollins that the
fries I had that day were substitutes. He normally serves 3/8" skin on fries which I have been told are fantastic. I look forward to trying them on my
next visit.
The other thing I really liked at BSF is that they serve a brand of soda I never heard of called Freaky Dog Soda. I did some research online and learned
that their sodas are made with 100% pure cane sugar. The result is a low-sodium, caffeine-free soda that contains no high fructose corn syrup. The
have 16 flavors ranging from Cola to Watermelon Eddie. It didn’t look like BSF served all 16 but they did have a wide variety. Freaky Dog Soda is a
Connecticut based company. It’s great to see two local businesses supporting each other. The Cream Soda by the way was fantastic. A perfect
compliment to my lunch.
If you are a burger connoisseur like I am then you have to add Burgers, Shakes ands Fries to your list.
Updated:
Following the recommendation of owner Kory Wollins I returned to BSF to try their usual fries, the 3/8" cut skin on fries. It was well worth the return
trip, not only did I love the fries but experiencing the burger for the second time around confirmed by original assesment. It's a must try in the Tri-
State area if you are looking for a great tasting burger.
